Since I can't seem to properly express my thoughts in writing (I end up chucking away everything I write because I just end up frustrated with the entire piece), I decided to try out a decidedly odd writing exercise.
One of my on-going fan-fics is an alternate universe of Yuugiou GX which I've affectionately come to call the Katabasis Universe (long story). One of my main problems with it is that I very often end up stuck -- some scenes just don't want to work with me when I have the drive to write.... and by the time I have a stroke of inspiration in regards to them, my writing desire is all but gone. This means that the whole thing has been moving at a snail's pace and that I've posted only one chapter out of it (which I now want to take down and greatly revise, for a number of reasons). The storyline is choppy and fragmented, with many scenes spread out over several pages of hand-writing that I've saved in a few notebooks -- something which has caused problems in other areas as well.
Given that moving along in chronological order seems to be all but impossible (I've been trying since 2007), it's time to bring in a new approach. Basically, what I want to do is stimulate my own writing appetite and flesh out this world some more by writing many little ficlets set within its boundaries (each between 500 -- 1000 words, though expect some to be far, far longer than this if inspiration is generous at that moment in time).
They won't be set in chronological order, they'll each vary in tone and they'll address issues from the points of view of several characters within this universe. I have no idea if I'll be able to write all 365 prompts within this table, but I will do my best to cover as many as possible in the boundaries of this set universe, so as to develop it to its fullest potential. In the end, this is more a writing exercise for myself, rather than a proper story -- so if I ever feel capable of writing Katabasis as a chronologically-ordered piece, I will do so, especially by greatly developing the details that will be laid out in this particular exercise.
The prompt table is called Buffet Table No. 1, taken from the
fc_smorgasbord fan-fiction writing challenge.
